Abstract

General Background: Primary school science instruction requires concrete visual learning tools to bridge abstract biological concepts with tangible experiences. Specific Background: Fourth-grade students frequently encounter difficulties visualizing plant parts and their specific functions when instruction relies solely on verbal explanations. Knowledge Gap: Traditional verbal delivery methods fail to provide students with the interactive, kinesthetic exploration needed to distinguish complex plant structures like roots, stems, leaves, and reproductive organs. Aims: This report documents the implementation of Smart Box and picture media to improve understanding of plant parts and functions among twenty-two fourth-grade learners. Results: Qualitative and observational findings reveal that interactive media successfully connects abstract science topics with direct visual experiences, accommodating diverse student ability levels. Novelty: The study integrates interactive Smart Box exploration with structured picture matching and collaborative group inquiry for elementary science education. Implications: Educators can adopt tactile media toolkits as an innovative pedagogical alternative to foster conceptual clarity and active participation in primary science classrooms.

Key Findings Highlights

  1. Tactile media tools successfully transform abstract botanical concepts into concrete visual experiences.
  2. Collaborative group exploration accommodates diverse student ability levels ranging from highly able to struggling learners.
  3. Formative pre-tests and post-tests effectively identify common misconceptions regarding plant part functions.
